Obadiah was an Old Testament prophet. His short book covers the past and the future. Verses 1-14 deal with God’s past judgment of the Edomites. The Edomites came from Esau the brother of Jacob (Israel). Those two were always against one another. Interestingly King Herod was an Edomite and Jesus came from the line of Jacob. Many years after Jacob and Esau, King Herod (From Esau) was still trying to kill the baby Jesus (from Jacob)! Verses 1 to 14 deal with past events whereas verses 15 on deal with yet a future time. There will be a day when Israel will be victorious and her enemies will fall.
“The day of the LORD is near for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
your deeds will return upon your own head.
16 Just as you drank on my holy hill,
so all the nations will drink continually;
they will drink and drink
and be as if they had never been.
17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;
it will be holy,
and the house of Jacob
will possess its inheritance.
18 The house of Jacob will be a fire
and the house of Joseph a flame;
the house of Esau will be stubble,
and they will set it on fire and consume it.
There will be no survivors
from the house of Esau.”
The LORD has spoken.
19 People from the Negev will occupy
the mountains of Esau,
and people from the foothills will possess
the land of the Philistines.
They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,
and Benjamin will possess Gilead.
- The house of Jacob are the Jews
- The house of Esau are the Arabs
- The people from the Negev is modern day Israel
- The mountains of Esau is modern day Jordan
- People from the foothills is modern day Israel
- Possess the land of the Philistines (This is modern day Gaza)
- The fields of Ephraim and Samaria (This is the modern day West Bank)
- Benjamin will possess Gilead (This is the East banks of the Jordan River which is modern day Jordan)
There is a day coming when modern day Israel will possess the land of the west bank, Gaza, and Jordan. Adding this prophecy to Psalm 83, Ezekiel 38, Isaiah, Joel, and Zechariah and one gets a picture of Israel prospering and once again being victorious. A time the world has not seen since King David and Solomon (1,000 B.C.)
Verse 18 paints a vivid picture:
The house of Jacob will be a fire
and the house of Joseph a flame;
the house of Esau will be stubble,
and they will set it on fire and consume it.
There will be no survivors
from the house of Esau.”
The house of Jacob and the house of Joseph are Jews which is modern day Israel. It seems there will be an attack on Israel (a fire, a flame) however Israel (God’s chosen) will prevail to the point that “There will be no survivors from the house of Esau.” (House of Esau are Arabs such as Hezbollah and Hamas)
The day of the LORD is near!
